Captain Ian Leslie Stuart Blenheim BRADLEY BCA, MPP RNZN
Ian Bradley joined the RNZN in Jan 1953 and trained at the RANC Jervis Bay. After Mids time in HMAS Melbourne he served in the RNZN ships Stawell, Endeavour Royalist and Otago. He completed the Long TAS course in 1962 and was awarded the Ogilvy Medal. He then did an exchange with the RN as TAS Officer in HMS Lowestoft in 1963/64. On return to NZ he held various appointments. He was the first XO of HMNZS Canterbury in 1971
In 1977-79 he commanded HMNZS Waikato. A witty and amusing writer his RoP’s were keenly sought reading. When in command of Waikato he put on his wet suit, and telling only his Leading Steward, he tested the ships man overboard procedure by jumping over the side.
In 1979 he undertook a review of the Auckland Command which resulted in the creation of the Captain Fleet Support Organisation of which he was the first Captain. Not confirmed in his Temporary Rank of Captain he resigned in August 1980. He then had a Commerical and Public Service career.
Ian was a keen and successful racer of a wide range of motor vehicles many of which he restored himself. His white MGTA was a familiar sight around Devonport. A talented artist and Sportsman he competed in Ironman competitions into his 60’s.. He died suddenly in Charleston South Carolina while visiting one of his daughters who lives in the USA.
