Cdr C.A.W (‘Chris’) Russell OBE Royal Navy

Chris was at Marlborough College and joined as a Special Entry Cadet in the 67th Entry on the 1 September 1945. He specialised in submarines in 1949. He had 6 submarine commands and was the first captain of HMS Explorer and one of his commands was HMS Repulse. He also served on the AIB at one time. He awarded his OBE for his work on Polaris training.he was also on the staff of FO Gib. He wrote his autobiography I think ’30 years in the Trade’ and the Submarine Museum has a copy.

After he retired he worked first in the Lomer School teaching mainly middle eastern officers Seamanship and the like. Later this was to lead him to being a Major in the Bahreini Police. After he retired he did a great job as the SSAFA Manager of the Gosport area and was on the Board of the Submarine Museum
