Commander Chris Ayres Royal Navy
It is with deep sadness that I report on the very sad death of Commander Chris Ayres, Royal Navy. He was an officer of great depth, experience, compassion and ability; he will be much missed by his family and all that ever met him. A man with a natural skillset that allowed him to interface at all levels, to guide those that sought his advice, and to provide clear and well considered direction when needed.
His Naval career started back in 1976 and as with the expectations of the Seaman / Executive branch, took him to sea in a variety of roles as he built his experience and maritime awareness. His time at sea created a broad range of capabilities that provided a strong platform for broader appointments that included PJHQ, ACSC instructor, Commander of RNAS Culdrose, and roles at Abbey Wood and MoD. His final appointment in uniform was as the Senior Maritime Instructor at the Mubarak Al Abdullah Joint Services Command and Staff College, Kuwait where he both imparted his knowledge and expertise, and provided a strong mentor to the officers across all 3 services.
Chris retired from the RN in February 2012, and remained in Kuwait until Jan 2013 where he was commercially employed by Aegis Defence Services as their in-country manager, a position he clearly enjoyed and made a complete success of. On return to UK he located on Portland and was head hunted as a subject matter expert by Integrated Training Solutions, specialising in Command and Control and as a very experienced training designer. He continued to enjoy an active life until slowed by illness. Despite being unwell, Chris continued to remain buoyant and was an inspiration to both family and friends
Chris’s funeral was held at All Saints Church, Wyke Regis, Weymouth on Wednesday 10th May, followed by a private family cremation. Chris leaves behind Wilda his wife, his 2 children and 5 Grand Children, and an enormous presence which will be missed more than he would ever know.
