Commander Alun Ap Hugh Evans RAN Retd

One of the RAN’s characters and dedicated bon vivants, Alun Evans was a member of the fabled RANC 1947 Entry – Hudson, Knox, Martin, Johnston, et al and qualified both as a TAS officer and as an observer.   He was promoted Commander in June 1969 and was later NOIC Queensland, where the factory fitted air conditioning in his official car had to be removed, as it was an entitlement of Captains’ and above only.

In retirement, he was the Technical Director/Naval Adviser of/to the ABC’s television drama Patrol Boat, which was released between 1979 and 1983.    The program had the support of the RAN and, thanks to Alun, 12 of the first 13 episodes were based on actual and, to many, recognisable events and subsequent episodes contained characters that were thinly disguised as acquaintances, and not necessarily friends, of Alun.
