Commander Athol Lloyd Rose RAN
Born in 1914 and entered the RAN as a sailor in the depression era. Commissioned in the pre-war navy, he was a leading writer. Served in HMAS Canberra when it was sunk off Savo (BSIP) in 1942. Badly wounded. Later served in HMAS Sydney during the Korean War. Promoted commander in 1952. Had a brief spell as an acting captain before reversion to his substantive rank. Retired in 1964. His son joined the RAN in 1961 and retired as a commodore. In his 100th year, he might have claimed to be the oldest senior officer for his age.
