COMMANDER JOHN ALEXANDER JEFFREYS (‘ALEC’) DENNIS DSC Royal Navy

When in HMS Griffin he was responsible on the 26 April 1940 for the capture of the German Steam Trawler Polaris ,known as VP 2623 in the Intelligence Histories. The chance capture of cypher settings enabled GC & SC to read in May the German Navy Enigma signals for 6 days in April and thus add considerably to its knowledge of German Navy W/Y and cryptographic procedures. When sailed the ship back toScapa Flow she was found to have depth charges, torpedoes, guns and five submarine mines which Lt.Glenny was able to render safe. He awarded his first of three MID for this on the 9 August 1940
