Commander Lawrence (Larry) Edward Herrick DSC Royal Navy

Larry Herrick joined the RN in 1936 as a NZ Dominion Special Entry. Commanded Submarines P556, Uproar, Trusty and Trespasser. Loaned to the RNZN he commanded the Frigate HMNZS Pukaki in the Korean War. His brother was Capt Terry Herrick RN. Three other brothers were killed in the RAF during the war.
The submarine P31 of which he was Captain of was renamed Ullswater in 1943. The name was not popular with the ships company so late one night Larry sent a signal suggesting that she be renamed Uproar as it best described her normal state. Nothing further was heard for some weeks when a signal arrived renaming Ullswater Uproar.
