Although we were close in age, I hardly ever crossed paths with him in the Service – he was a Communicator, and left early – I think when he succeeded to his father’s baronetcy. But I do remember him before he went to Dartmouth. He had a natural aptitude for all ball-games, and was the mainstay of his prep-school (Lambrook) teams at Cricket, Soccer, and Rugby. At other schools, when a match with Lambrook was being discussed, and the chances of winning assessed, small boys would say, with awe, “But they’ve got Rivett-Carnac”.
