Commodore Dacre Smyth AO RAN

World War II he served as a Midshipman in HMAS AUSTRALIA in the Battle of Coral Sea, in HMS DANAE at the Normandy invasion in 1944, in HMAS NORMAN in the Burma campaign and in the Pacific Fleet off Japan. He served in HMAS BATAAN during the Korean War and in HMAS HAWKSESBURY from 1953-55. His last sea command was HMAS SUPPLY 1968-70. He also served as DG Personnel Services in Navy Office and was our Naval Representative in UK in the 1960s. Six of his last 8 years in the RAN was as Naval Officer In Charge Victoria. He was of course also well known as a prolific artist, and author and publisher of at least a dozen fine books including Gallipoli Pilgrimage and Historic Ships of Australia. Some of you would know that he created the stained glass windows we have in several of our Naval chapels, and particularly those in the chapel at HMAS CERBERUS. Many of his nautical paintings hang on the bulkheads in the CERBERUS Museum and others around Victoria.
