Commodore William Prine HAYES CD
He entered the RCN in 1939 after two years at the Royal Military College, Canada. He served with the RN as a Midshipman in HMS ‘Liverpool’ and ‘York’, in the Mediterranean, being in the latter when she was torpedoed and beached in Suda Bay, where hse became a total loss. He then served in HMS ‘Isis’, and in 1942 went to HMCS ‘Iroquois’, serving in he during the battle of the North Cape on Boxing Day 1943, when the ‘Scharnhorst’ was sunk. ‘Iroquois’ served in the English Chanel and Western Approaches in 1944/5, and he earned two M-i-Ds. After the war, he commanded HMCS ‘Cayuga’ in Korea, had two Squadron commands and the Atlantic Fleet. He was Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada, and the Canadian Forces Staff College. He was Hon. ADC to the Governor-General 1967-73.
