Lieutenant Francis Humphreys Jones Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
Francis Humphreys Jones died Apr 12, aged 91.
Ship’s dentist on the light cruiser Sheffield during the war. Served on Atlantic convoys and was part of the 15th Cruiser Squadron which supported the landings at Salerno. On Boxing Day 1943 Sheffield took part in the Battle of North Cape when the German battleship Scharnhorst was sunk. At Scapa Flow in May 1944 one officer from each British ship was invited to dine in the admiral’s cabin of the battleship Duke of York with the King. Humphreys Jones was chosen, describing it as a unique honour and the King as a perfect host. Postwar Humphreys Jones opened his own surgery in Caernarvon. He was a founder member of the Council for the Protection of Rural Wales and the Caernarvon Civic Society. Received three medals from the Russian government for his role in shipping supplies to the wartime USSR.
