Lieutenant The Reverend John Kettlewell (‘Biffo’) Mills Royal Navy
Biffo served in Cachalot and Odin – his claim to fame was that one stormy night whilst at anchor in the Solent Cachalot started to drag. Undeterred Biffo as the only officer onboard took the Boat out to sea. I understand that Biffo spent about three days in the Channel riding out the storm before taking the boat back into Dolphin – undoubtedly to the profound relief of his then Commanding Officer.
Biffo left the RN in 1979 to read Theology at St John’s College Durham. where he met Sue Brooks who was to become his wife. They married in 1984 on the Wirral shortly before his Ordination in Chester Diocese. He was a Deacon at St Mary’s Church Sale but he moved to Manchester where he served as Team Vicar in Didsbury in 1987. Latterly he was Vicar of St Johns’s Church Styvechale, Coventry which is where he died suddenly on 13 September 2013.
