Lieutenant Commander David Harris MBE, Royal Navy

David Harris died on Thursday 8 March 2009 of pancreatic cancer aged 64

David was a qualified Shipwright and enjoyed a naval career that spanned 34 years including service in submarines. His last appointment was CO of HMS Victory between 31st March 1991 to 30th March 1994 Previously he had been First Lieutenant of HMS Daedalus

After leaving the Navy was deputy director of HMS Belfast until the end of 1998. He then became Director of Operations for the newly formed Greenwich Foundation and oversaw the refurbishment of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Having completed this major project he became Director of The Coastal Forces Heritage Trust in 2007.

He was the author, with Anthony Cross, of The Nelson Almanac: A Book of Days Recording Nelson’s Life and the Events that Shaped His Era

He was also the immediate past Treasurer of The 1805 Club between 2001 and 2008.
