Lt Cdr R W G Box RD RNR
Roy learnt to fly with the Fleet Air Arm during National Service 1952-1954 being promoted Sub Lieutenant (A) RNVR. After National Service he flew Fireflies and Gannets from RNAS Ford. However his flying career was cut short when the RNVR’s Air Squadrons were disbanded in 1957. Subsequently he was attached to HMS President, and served in the Naval Control of Shipping branch until 1989.
In civilian life he was a chartered engineer with the Central Electricity Generating Board working in both Generation and Transmission departments of the Board’s South Eastern Region, and later at CEGB’s Head Office. In the latter part of his career he ran his own consultancy specialising in the design, installation and management of Quality Systems to meet the requirements of ISO 9000.
He was C.Eng, MIEE, MIMechE MBIM, and CompRAeS, and later gained a degree in Social Sciences and History from the Open University.
In retirement he much enjoyed the fellowship of a number of maritime organisations in London being a regular attender at the Naval Club, the RNR Dining Club. the RNR Yacht Club, and the HMS President Retired Officers’ Association.
