Lt. Col. William Thomas (‘Robbie’) Robertson CBE, MC, mid, Legion of Honour (Fr.)

Former Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, 1968 to 1975. Sacked by Labor PM Gough Whitlam over the activities of one of his agents in East Timor. Former AIF officer (2/8 Bn.) who also served with the 50th Division, British Army, in the liberation of Europe in 1944. A distant relative was the late Captain R J Robertson, DSC (ex-HMS Malcolm, WWII) whose career was ended after HMAS Voyager collided with his ship, the flagship and aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, on 10 February, 1964. Captain Robertson’s son, (Commodore) Brian, commanded Maritime Forces at Timor late last century.
