Lieutenant Martin Ivor Harriman Royal Navy

Martin Harriman joined BRNC on 1 September 1945. After service in the training cruiser HMS Devonshire, the light carrier HMS Glory and HMNZS Rotoiti during the Korean War he did courses at Greenwich. He then served in the minesweepers HMS Cheerful and HMS Wiay. Having married a New Zealander he requested loan service with the RNZN and served in HMNZS Hawea. Injured playing rugby against the Fijian police, this led to his invaliding from the Navy in 1957. He decided to stay in New Zealand and completed a Commerce degree. He then joined a stock broking firm and rose to be the senior partner of Creagh Harriman Mackenzie. He was Chairman of the Auckland Stock Exchange and President of the Stock Exchanges Association of New Zealand. He oversaw the amalgamation of the New Zealand regional stock exchanges into one national exchange. He was a member of the Securities Commission which oversaw financial markets. He was also a member of the Russell Inquiry into the 1987 share market crash in New Zealand. He always regarded his best investment decision was the sale of his firm to one of his larger competitors shortly before the 1987 share market crash.
