1. IT IS WITH DEEP SADNESS THAT I ADVISE THE PASSING OF COMMODORE MICHAEL THOMAS DUNNE AM RAN (RTD) AT THE AGE OF 79

2. BORN IN WOLLONGONG NSW ON 27 JUL 44 HE JOINED THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY ON 29 JAN 63 AS A CADET MIDSHIPMAN

3. ON GRADUATION FROM THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVAL COLLEGE, HE UNDERTOOK SEAMAN OFFICER TRAINING AND RECEIVED HIS FULL BRIDGE WATCHKEEPING CERTIFICATE IN FEB 68. HE THEN TRANSFERRED TO THE SUBMARINE SERVICE, GAINING HIS DOLPHINS IN 1968 AND COMMISSIONING HMAS ONSLOW AS SONAR OFFICER AND SERVING IN HMAS OVENS. HE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE PERISHER COURSE IN 1977 AND SUBSEQUENTLY COMMANDED HMS FINWHALE

4. HE WAS PROMOTED TO CMDR IN JUN 80 AND POSTED AS CO HMAS OTAMA IN 1981. PROMOTED TO CAPT IN JUN 86, HE SERVED AS CO OF HMA SHIPS WATSON, STALWART AND CERBERUS. IN
1987, HE PRESIDED OVER THE NAVAL BOARD OF INQUIRY INTO THE HMAS OTAMA ACCIDENTAL DEATHS OF TWO SAILORS. HE WAS PROMOTED TO CDRE IN DEC 91 AND SERVED AS DIRECTOR GENERAL FORCE DEVELOPMENT (SEA), CHIEF OF STAFF AND DEPUTY NAVAL SUPPORT COMMANDER, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF NAVAL POLICING AND DIRECTOR GENERAL PLANNING AND POLICIES

5. HE SAW ACTIVE SERVICE IN MALAYSIA, RECEIVING THE AUSTRALIAN ACTIVE SERVICE MEDAL (AASM) 1945-75 WITH CLASP MALAYSIA AS WELL AS THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL (ASM)
1945-75 WITH CLASP FESR AND THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL WITH CLASP SPECIAL OPS. HE WAS ALSO AWARDED THE GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1962 WITH CLASP MALAY PENINSULA

6. HE WAS APPOINTED A MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA (AM) IN THE 1994 AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS LIST FOR SERVICE TO THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY, PARTICULARLY AS DIRECTOR GENERAL FORCE DEVELOPMENT (SEA)

7. CDRE DUNNE TRANSFERRED TO THE RANR IN FEB 98

8. HE WAS AN ENTHUSIASTIC RUGBY PLAYER AND SUPPORTER, PLAYING AS FULL BACK FOR THE HMAS OTAMA TEAM IN THE MONS CUP AND SERVING AS PRESIDENT OF THE RAN RUGBY UNION AND LATER THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICES RUGBY UNION

9. CDRE DUNNE’S FUNERAL WILL BE HELD ON THU 6 JUN 24, COMMENCING 1100 AT THE ST PETER CHANEL CHURCH, CHAPROWE RD, THE GAP (BRISBANE). SERVICE DRESS FOR ATTENDEES IS W2
