Rear Admiral Derek Garland (”Spike”) Spickernel CB

He was the son of Cdr. S.G.Spickernell,R.N., I believe was Admiral Jellicoe’s Secretary. He was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School and entered the Royal Navy as a Engine Room Artificer in 1937, He joined up as a Naval Cadet (E) with the 47th. Special Entry on the 1st. Jan 1939 and spent one term in HMS Frobisher and one term in HMS Vindictive. He specialised in S/Ms in 1943. Cdr. 31.12.53. Captain 30.06.62. Rear Admiral 07.07.71. After retirement he joined the Britsih Standards Institute (BSI)and was much revered and the first Director- General for 1981-86.
