Sub-Lieutenant Emeritus Professor Richard S.B. Gye AO RANVR

Born in 1926. Entered c. 1944 and served until c. 1947. He did not serve in the Pacific War as he was completing survey courses after officer training in 1945. Was a sub-lieutenant in a GPV doing minesweeping operations off Queensland in the immediate post-war period. Rear Admiral Andrew Robertson was also involved in the same tasks with him at the time. Qualified for the NGSM clasp Minesweeping 1945-1951. He was unaware of his eligibility in his later years and I found the required papers in Victoria which established his claim for status as a veteran. Dean of Medicine, Sydney University. In return, he took me to the Australian Club for lunch. He also volunteered to give me a medical examination in his rooms, possibly on Macquarie Street. I had injured my back lifting a safe and his recommendation helped confirm a compensation claim. Some members within the medical profession may remember him from the fifties as he was said to have worked in the NHS for a period. He trained in neuro-surgery in Britain. An obituary is being considered. A very fine man.
