Vice-Admiral, RAN David Willoughby LEACH AO, CBE, LVO Royal Australian Navy
He was the Parade Training Officer at Whale Island in 1955 and was the Course Officer for 'P' Group Sub-Lieutenants who pulled off the 'Elephant Stunt', probably the best known of the many japes which were played on Whaley in the late `40s and `50s. His part in the jape was to take in to the Captain of Excellent, later that Friday morning the course results, which David headed "Sub-Lieutenant L E Fant". The Captain of Whaley, now long deceased, was a man singularly lacking in a sense of humour, and he merely looked at the list and said "Fant, Fant, who's this feller Fant?"
