Vice-Admiral Sir Ian Lachlan Mackay McGEOCH, KCB, DSO, DSC

Sir Ian who was aged 93, was our editor in the 1960s and 70s, having had a distinguished career in submarines. He commanded HMS ‘Splendid’ in the Med. in 1942-3, but had to scuttle her after she was badly damaged in a depth charge attack off Corsica. He was taken prisoner, but escaped, and made his way back to British lines, despite having lost an eye. He returned to active service within a year of having been captured. He continued to have sea commands in the post-war period, and completed his carrerr by being FOSM and FOSNI. In retirement, he was Trustee of the Imperial War Museum, a member of the RYS, Commodore of the RNSA, and a prolific author.
