By the Editor: Epic pictures of the UK’s Carrier Strike Groups in today’s media reflects a line of development back to the early 20th Century and perhaps no more so than 80 years ago this month. Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham was among the most far sighted of senior officers on the potential of the Fleet Air Arm in WWII. The author, writing from the USA, here describes Cunningham’s developing interest as a non-aviator, the consequence of that thinking and the subsequent unintended aftermath where, perhaps the Japanese learned lessons leading to the Pearl Harbor attack just over one year later.…
