It is only on reflection, having been asked by the Editor to write this piece on our most successful Admiral since Lord Fieldhouse, that I realise how much I came under his wing. Not through any sense of favouritism, he wasn’t that sort of man, but by virtue of the luck that had me serving for and with him in several appointments throughout my career.
