I served with Nigel Ward as a midshipman in 1963 for a year in HMS Tartar in the West Indies. The article in this edition by Bruce Pascoe portrays Sharkey well. As a midshipman he was awarded a first class pass in the examination. He was very intelligent, meticulous, reliable, fun and not quite as piratical at that stage of his career. Many good leaders do not ‘suffer fools’ and Ward worked extremely hard in trying to convince others of his case.
