Sir, – I think that David Childs (NR107/3) has produced a timely, thought-provoking article, so much so that I feel that after around 40 years of membership of The Naval Review I should make my first contribution. Some readers may think this should also be my last! I feel that David has made a sensible case with which I generally agree. But I am not too comfortable with a couple of the assertions he makes.
