The Distinguished Service Order and Three Bars The Distinguished Service Order (DSO) was instituted in 1886 to award “individual instances of meritorious or distinguished service in war.”1London Gazette, 9th November 1886, pg. 5385 Some 20,000 awards have since been won, with Bars issued for subsequent awards after 1916. Only 16 individuals have been awarded Three Bars to their DSO – five of whom did so in the Royal Navy.2Bernard Freyberg was commissioned in the RNVR after the outbreak of the First World War and earned the DSO before transferring to the army, where he was awarded Three Bars.
