Not for the first time in the 21st century, the Commando Force and Royal Navy is once again facing the question of what to do about its amphibious shipping. The UK’s amphibious capability is at its nadir and without correction the outlook is not likely to get better. The problem is working out how to square the circle of reduced investment, support to formation-level operations necessitating lift and speed, vulnerability of amphibious platforms to long range targeting, and political hostility to a previous government’s programme of record.
