On May 14th, more than 80% of Turkish voters took part in a cliff-hanger election that saw Turkey’s embattled President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emerge victorious once again. Prior to last month’s election, there was a broad consensus that Erdogan and his AKP were at their weakest politically. His insistence on keeping interest rates low and encouraging borrowing had caused havoc for the Turkish economy, with spiralling inflation rates and high cost of living as the Turkish Lira fell to historic lows against the USD, Pound and Euro.
