Sir, – In security terms “talk softly and carry a big stick” has long been a successful maxim. In recent years we have neglected it. Our stance has been more “braying while carrying a twig.” Latterly we have claimed that space, cyber and hybrid warfare will dominate future conflicts and so have greatly reduced our conventional capabilities. This is a delusion. President Putin is demonstrating that these new capabilities are not replacements, but additional ways in which war can be waged. Tanks on the lawn and control of surrounding sea and airspace remain undeniable markers of battle success.…
