Sir, – I have been a member of The Naval Review since my Dartmouth days in July 1964 and an avid reader of the Review when I was on active service up to 1998 and since then. As an amateur historian, I pay particular attention to the references at the end of articles. I very much enjoyed Major Ian Smith RM’s article ‘Cooperation and Conflict: The Anglo-American Alliance Before D-Day’ (NR107/4 p.499-508) until I reached the last-page; where I was disappointed to find that most of the references were just a name and a date.
