By the Editor – The author surveys the USN career of Rear Admiral Robert Dixon, a heroic aircraft carrier pilot during the Second World War, aircraft carrier commander during the Korean War, and the motivating force behind the design and production of the F-4 Phantom. A 10 minute read.

Rear Admiral Dixon was one of The Great Generation; moreover he belonged to an elite group within the US Navy, the naval pilots. The outcome of the Pacific War depended on their valour, dedication and skill. Dixon was born far from the sea in Richland, Georgia on 22 April 1906. His birthplace was a small town less than 25 miles from the Alabama state line.
