NR 111/3, for the mindset of the RN’s leadership as a cultural component of a maritime nation in today’s complex operating environment. A 5 minute read.

This essay argues that navies are a strategic tool of the state for maintaining peace, diplomacy and, in the worst case, waging war, both in the physical world and in the important world of perception. The aim is to attempt to reflect upon the importance of the intangible components of the ‘Art of Admiralty’ and to offer the concept of liminal advantage. The Art of Admiralty is founded upon the recognition of, and exploitation of, a unique operating environment – the Sea: in its reality and in the minds of foes and friends.
