Far too little has hitherto been heard of the doings of the Royal Marines in this war. Many members must be familiar with the remarks of Lord St. Vincent on the 11th of March, 1823, two days before his death :- “In obtaining for them (the Marines) the distinction of ‘ Royal ‘ I but inefficiently did my duty. I never knew an appeal to them for honour, courage or loyalty that they did not more than realize my highest expectation.
