By the Editor: The 100th anniversary of the scuttling prompted a look, by the author, at the part played in that event by Admiral Sir Sydney Fremantle, a member of his family. This article is drawn largely from some of Admiral Fremantle’s papers in the National Maritime Museum, his published memoir My Naval Career and the galley proof of an article he wrote for The Naval Review in the 1950s.
