The author reviews post-Second World War developments in the Submarine Service, and considers the future challenges and prospects for the RN’s nuclear submarine force. A 20 minute read.

Introduction The Submarine Service has reached a post-WWII nadir. It is struggling to maintain Continuous At Sea Deterrence (CASD), is experiencing low SSN operational availability, and is confronting significant difficulties in recruiting and retention. Added to these, in recent years there have occurred a series of events which have engendered adverse publicity: SSBN patrols, one exceeding 200 days; alleged hazardous near-misses; and instances of officer behaviour well below the expected standards.
