The invasion of Nazi occupied Europe was a challenge that plagued Allied command up until the very minute Operation OVERLORD was given the go-ahead in the early hours of 6th June 1944, having been delayed from the previous day due to bad weather. The entire invasion hung in the balance. The mammoth task would involve penetrating Hitler’s famed ‘Atlantikwall’, and conducting amphibious landings across five beaches on the Normandy coast divided between the US, UK and Canada: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
