Sir, – Many businesses and organisations in the UK now seem to have a department that does nothing but come up with silly names, whether it is for job titles, departments or things. The Ministry of Defence certainly has a Silly Names Department. It is probably run by an Air Commodore. No one I have spoken to thinks that the new Wider Service Medal is a sensible name. While all applaud the award of a medal for onerous or long service away from home, service that was not hitherto recognised, the name is plain silly.
