The Chief Executive of Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is the UK’s National Armaments Director (NAD) and as the Accounting Officer for DE&S is directly responsible to Parliament for the stewardship of DE&S’ resources. The author posits that the NAD should consider the historical contribution of Lord Beaverbrook, whose long career, like that of Winston Churchill or Maurice Hankey during both World Wars, demonstrated the vital importance of economic control in wartime.
