I attended the Trafalgar and Taranto Dinners at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) recently. Both dinners concentrated on the battles, and both were naturally a good evening. However, having delivered two lectures about the Trafalgar campaign to the Peruvian Naval Academy and Peruvian War College in October 2024, and provided information about the raid on Taranto to the Officer organising that dinner at BRNC, I began to wonder whether many military dinners celebrating one battle or action are missing the context and campaign into which the battles fit.
