The author, Mechanical Engineering Officer (MEO) of HMS Fearless, carrying the Command and Warfare (COMAW) headquarters and with a large workforce and engineering support then on board, provides here the first of a series of retrospectives on his experience during the Falklands War. A 30 minute read.

By 1981 I had served in submarines for many years (two diesel, three nuclear and submarine staff jobs) and was due to return to my original training as a steam engineer. My original appointment to Fearless had been cancelled because Paul Anthony (another nuclear submarine engineer officer) had had a tragic motorbike accident which nearly cost him his life. I was detailed to fill his job in the MoD as I was available and the appointer was going to find someone else to go to Fearless, which wasn’t for another three months.
