There is nothing simple or absolute in any contemporary examination of the United Kingdom and its maritime strategy. The first quarter of the 21st century, certainly as far as the UK is concerned, encompassed some of the most momentous tipping points since the last vestiges of the British Empire disappeared in the 1950s.
