The author comments on Cdre Steve Jermy’s recent article regarding the imperative for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine War.

Sir, – For me the most important article in the latest edition of The Naval Review is Steve Jermy’s article ‘The Balance of Power in the Russo-Ukraine War’ [113/3, p. 336] which contains an excoriating review of our national ability to take a strategic approach to our defence, or for that matter to almost any other of our public necessities. Let me briefly explain why. He suggests that the likely outcome has always been a Russian “victory.” I agree and had many discussions to this effect with Royal Marine and Army friends in the summer of 2022, and continuously since then.
