Our correspondent provides an appreciation of Royal Navy leadership maintaining strategic direction during the COIN era.

Sir, – I am writing in response to Lt Cdr White’s recent discussion on Sea Control [113/4, p. 554], offering an alternative perspective on whether the UK neglected maritime power during the counterinsurgency era. I argue that strategic investment continued despite resource constraints, highlighting the Royal Navy’s global alliances and future capability developments. Lt Cdr White’s article raises an important question: has the Royal Navy lost its ability to exercise sea control due to decisions made during the counterinsurgency (COIN) era?
