Our correspondent replies to SLt James Shelley’s historical investigation of Mountbatten’s influence on perceptions of the Dieppe Raid [113/1, p. 126].

Sir, – I found the Winter 2025 article on the Dieppe Raid of 1942 by SLt James Shelley impressive and interesting. It was well-researched and covered the subject very well. He is to be commended for such a good article. However, it is useful to uncover another and much more recent element of myth: that of the Raid’s main function being a cover for an Enigma snatch operation. This is well described in the Wikipedia ‘Dieppe Raid’ article under the heading ‘the Enigma pinch’ and has been authoritatively debunked by the late Eric Grove.
