Our correspondent relates the fascinating story of his own involvement in the K219 saga.

Sir, – Ref: Hostile Waters written by Captain First Rank Igor Kurdin and the US naval attaché Peter Huchthausen with cover comments by Tom Clancy. Igor Kurdin had served as second in command of K219. This highly recommended book tells the tale of how the old Russian Yankee-class ballistic missile carrying submarine K219 was sunk whilst on deterrent patrol off Bermuda and is the only nuclear powered deterrent submarine sunk while carrying her nuclear missiles.
