Message from the Editor

Our correspondent defends the value of Initial Sea Training (IST), and argues that reduction of fleet size is the fundamental reason ‘at sea’ training has been discarded for Officer Cadets.

Sir, – A recent Royal Navy Temporary Memorandum (RNTM)[1] informed the Service of the deletion of Initial Sea Training (IST) for Officer Cadets undertaking their Initial Naval Training (INT(O)) at Britannia Royal Naval College. The RNTM introduces this change by stating that IST had been what it referred to as, “a custom and practise (sic) solution for introducing Phase 1 Officer cadets to a maritime environment for over 25 years.” It then follows this up by stating that, “There is no specific requirement for the delivery of ship-based IST” before explaining that it was impossible to del…
