Our correspondent responds to Lt Gen Robert Fry’s recent article, sounding a note of caution and encouragement.

Sir, – The role of the First Sea Lord should not be overstated. In fact, over the 20th and 21st centuries, their role has been further diminished. Since the founding of the professional Navy (and the Royal Marines) under King Henry VIII, it was acknowledged that a civilian council – the Admiralty – would be maintained, with matters of naval operations and warfare being delegated to sailors at sea, as they are best placed to handle them.
