Our correspondent questions the Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD) from a perspective of cost and strategic choice for the future of the Submarine Service.

Sir,- Chatham House posted on X (formerly Twitter) on 10 July that, “The plateauing of the UK’s defence spending at 2.7% of GDP will raise eyebrows among allies – so too the ever-increasing proportion of the defence budget allocated to the UK’s nuclear deterrent.”[1] The Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) represents roughly 20% rising to 25% of the UK’s total defence budget.[2] This means that out of the £66bn allocated to defence, some £13.5bn, rising to £16.5bn, falls to the DNE and is ring-fenced.
