Two calls for recognition of realism against hyperbole in the public geopolitical discourse.

We are not in a ‘1937 moment’ Sir, – While listening eagerly to a recent edition of the fantastic BFBS podcast Sitrep, I was disappointed to once again hear the security challenge facing the UK referred to as a ‘1937 moment’. Such a comparison, which occasionally rears its head in its ‘1930s moment’ or ‘1938 moment’ form, deeply frustrates me. It may be a useful device in the public sphere, but is ultimately simplistic to the extent that it is misleading.
