The Polar regions have mattered geographically, commercially, and scientifically to Britain since explorations into the Arctic began in the 1570s.[1] Led by the Royal Navy, the desire to chart and explore the world’s largest deserts[2] spread to the southern polar regions in the 19th century and those early drivers of trade, science, security and sovereignty remain key tenets of the UK’s strategies for the Polar Regions today.[3] To support this National ambition, the Royal Navy maintains an enduring Ice Patrol presence in the Antarctic, as it has done continuously since the Second World War.[…
